Welcome to the official web page of
William Fried
Hailed as "poised and remarkably dexterous" by The Boston Globe, and his playing described as "subtly shaded
and delicately phrased" by sandiego.com, pianist William Fried has appeared in concert at venues across North
America; recent engagements include performances with redfishbluefish at the LA Philharmonic's Green Umbrella
Series at Disney Hall, a guest artist residency at New England Conservatory's Summer Institute for Contemporary
Performance Practice (SICPP), and frequent appearances on UC San Diego's Wednesday @ 7 series. An advocate of
contemporary music and composer-performer collaboration, he has commissioned and performed numerous premieres,
recordings of which have been released on Mode, Carrier, and various independent labels.
From 2005-2011, he was in residence at the University of California, San Diego, where he performed frequently
with Palimpsest, redfishbluefish, and the La Jolla Symphony, and appeared as piano soloist with the Chamber
Orchestra (twice), the Wind Ensemble, and several regional orchestras. He also taught courses ranging from
20th century music surveys to seminars on topics in musicology, and in 2009-2010 held the composition program's
soloist-in-residence position, a fully-funded residency to commission and record works for piano and electronics
by graduate student composers. In 2009, his playing was featured in "This Week @ UCSD" as part of an expose on
the recently completed Conrad Prebys Concert Hall.
Fried holds degrees in mathematics from Brown University (Sc.B.), and in piano from the New England Conservatory
(MM) and the University of California, San Diego (DMA). He has recently relocated to his native Rhode Island,
where, in addition to maintaining an active performance schedule, he manages the educational and community
partnerships of the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
