Intrview/Audition Dates

We accept new students all year round.

Audition Location

In-person: New Seasons Church, 7997 Paradise Valley Road, Spring Valley, CA.
Online: Zoom, Skype.

Audition Requirements

Ten minutes of contrasting material from candidate's repertoire (candidate must provide two extra copies of the music which will be returned at the conclusion of the audition) The audition may also include sight-reading.

Audition For Beginners does not include playing an instrument, and will be conducted in group settings to determine if every applicant has a sense of rhythm, can differenciate between higher and lower pitch, etc. Typically beginners do not experience a pressure of being on a spotlight and treated as a group throughout the whole process. For "I'm looking to enroll in..." choose "Pre-Orchestra Division" when filling out the Audition Application Form.

Each candidate must sign in fifteen minutes before their scheduled time. You may not bring a cell phone, audio or visual equipment and food with you to warm-up and audition rooms.

Audition Tips

1. Level of preparation is the most important factor - well prepared easier piece will score higher than poorly prepared more difficult piece.

2. Choose pieces that allow you to show off your best skills.

3. Before you come for audition, ask your friends/family to be your virtual audition pannel and play your pieces for them at least once. Ask them for constructive criticism. Use their notes to improve.

Audition FAQ

What are the audition criterias?
The Audition Pannel will grade you on a scale form 0 to 10 for the following:
1. Level of Preparation
2. Tone quality
3. Rhythm
4. Intonation
5. Articulation
6. Dynamics
7. Musicianship(ability to create, refine and deliver music character)
8. Overall self-presentation (appearance/manners/communication skills/emotional balance).

When should I arrive?
Arrive at least 20 minutes before your audition time. Plan for any possible traffic.

Should I memorize my music?
Memorization is not required, but playing from memory will earn you a higher score for "level of preparation".

How long is the audition?
An average audition is 5-8 minutes, though younger players may audition for a shorter time at the discretion of the audition panel. During your audition, you may be stopped by the panel and asked to go to another solo or excerpt. This is common and does not reflect upon your performance.

What should I wear?
Wear nice clothes which are comfortable to perform in. This is the first impression you will make on those who will evaluate you. It is also a good idea to practice in the clothes you are planning to wear for your audition at least one time.

When will I find out if I have been accepted?
Generally, the results are available at the conclusion of the audition. However, for the more competitive positions in the Advanced Division, results may take up to 3 weeks after your audition.

Is parking available?
Free parking lots are available at all audition locations.
